It’s Ok to Not Feel Okay

Have you ever found yourself trying too hard to make yourself feel okay about a situation when you just don’t?

I’m sure most of us have. And it’s okay for us to feel not okay with something without it pulling us down into a spiral of negative emotions. It is possible to remain calm even though you aren’t good with something.

Recently, a situation came up for me in which I didn’t have the emotional capacity to deal with it. I broke down and spoke to my family and we decided together that on that day with that particular situation, I didn’t have to be okay with it nor did I have to decide what to do.

And therein lies our personal power. I didn’t give my power away, I allowed others to handle something that in that moment they were better equipped to deal with. Perhaps next time, I’ll be that person, but on that day, it wasn’t me, and that’s okay. My oldest daughter even said to me that it was okay for me to never feel okay about the situation which gave me pause to express myself on the topic on our latest podcast, and here on the blog.

Allowing myself to feel whatever I do in any given situation gives me the power in how I want to react. When we try to convince ourselves that we are always okay when we are not, we aren’t being authentic. People often spiritually bypass themselves by trying to find the silver lining, or convincing themselves they’re ok when they have to deal with something difficult. Admitting that we don’t feel good in the situation helps us decide on an authentic course of action, one in which helps us acknowledge our feelings and receive the support we need. Then we don’t have to deal with difficult situations alone.

As I process through this, it’s refreshing, and bringing up more to examine that I set aside years ago because I didn’t know how to emotionally process it at the time. As I look at it now, I can become ok with not feeling okay about it, and release any stuck emotions that I hadn’t dealt with at the time.
